Width is the side facing the road. For an irregular plot, use the average of the two widths and the two depths.

Marla and bigha differ by state; the marla here is the common 272.25 sq ft. 1 gaj = 1 square yard = 9 sq ft. 1 cent = 435.6 sq ft. 1 guntha = 1,089 sq ft.

How to measure your plot

  1. Measure all four sides with a tape, not just the sale deed figures. Old plots are often a few inches off.
  2. Measure both diagonals. If they differ by more than 6 inches, the plot is not a true rectangle and the plan must be adjusted.
  3. Note which side faces the road, where the drain and electricity pole are, and any trees you want to keep.
  4. Find north with a phone compass, especially if you want to follow Vastu.
