The nine zones
Vastu divides the plot into a 3 × 3 grid aligned to the compass. Each zone is linked to an element and an activity. The grid on the right shows the usual recommendations, with north at the top.
On the plans in this library the road is always at the bottom of the drawing. Turn the drawing so its road side matches your plot, then read the zones from the compass. If a room lands in the wrong zone, the Mirror left/right switch in the plan viewer often fixes it.

Room by room
| Room | Preferred zone | Avoid | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main entrance | North, east or north-east | South-west | Morning light at the door |
| Kitchen | South-east; north-west second | North-east, directly facing the main door | Morning sun dries the kitchen; smoke blows away from the house in most winds |
| Master bedroom | South-west | North-east, south-east | The coolest, most private corner |
| Children's bedroom | West or north-west | South-east | Good afternoon light for study |
| Puja room | North-east | Under a stair, next to a toilet | Quiet, bright morning corner |
| Toilets | West or north-west | North-east, centre | Keeps wet areas away from the bright corner |
| Stair | South, west or south-west, turning clockwise | North-east, centre | Keeps the light north-east side open |
| Living room | North or east | South-west | Daylight for the main family room |
| Overhead tank | South-west | North-east | Heavy load on the side with the master bedroom |
| Underground sump, borewell | North-east or north | South-west | Traditional placement for water |
| Car parking | North-west or south-east | North-east corner fully covered | Keeps the north-east open |
By plot facing
- East-facing plot: the plans work as drawn. Entrance in the north-east part of the front, kitchen front-left (south-east), master bedroom rear-left (south-west).
- North-facing plot: entrance in the north or north-east part of the front. Mirror the plan if the kitchen lands in the north-east.
- West-facing plot: keep the entrance in the north-west part of the front; put the master bedroom at the rear-left (south-west). West plots get hot afternoon sun at the front, so a front sitout or balcony helps.
- South-facing plot: entrance in the south-east part of the front. Put heavier rooms (stair, store) at the front-left and keep the rear (north) open with a yard.
Vastu is a tradition, not building law. Structural safety, fire exits, light and ventilation come first. If a Vastu change makes a room too small or dark, keep the better room.
